Year 2 Curriculum
Here is our Curriculum Overview which shows what the children will be learning in Year 2.
Maths Calculation Policy
After speaking with many of you at parents evening, we feel that it would be beneficial for the Maths Calculation policy to be available so you can see the methods we are using in school. This will help when completing Maths homework with your child. We are holding a Maths Information Evening In November where parents are invited into school to participate in Maths Workshops – please see the events page for more details.
Homework will be sent home each Friday and we would like your child to return it by the following Tuesday.
Year 2 children will receive:
10 spellings, which will be matched to your child’s level of ability
English and Maths homework.
Each half term we will send a grid of homework activities linked to our topic work. These are designed to support learning across the curriculum and should be fun to complete together at home with your child. Whilst it is not essential that all of these are completed, we ask that your child should aim to complete some of the activities throughout the half term to reinforce their learning across the curriculum.
We understand that family life can be busy and hectic, and we look forward to your child completing as much of the topic homework as you find manageable.
Your child’s reading books will be changed once a week following on from their Guided Reading session in school. The day on which their book will be changed will depend on which reading group they are in.
Your child will take home 2 books, 1 fiction and 1 non-fiction to read together with an adult. Please read both books with your child and remember that ‘little and often’ is a good approach to reading. If your child finishes reading the books we would ask you to read through them again together, talk about the book and ask them questions about the text they have read in more depth to encourage their comprehension skills.
It is really important that you read with and listen to your child read every day. Research shows that children who read at home to an adult on a daily basis make more progress in school. We believe that quality reading is better than quantity and that a good 10 minutes of reading with your child is more effective than trying to make them read for 30 minutes after a long day at school!
2L have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
2B have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays
2W have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Please ensure that your child has their full PE bag in school all of the time and that all of their kit is FULLY LABELLED with their FULL NAME.
We sometimes need our PE kits for other curriculum activities which may be on a different day to our set PE days.
What a great last week of term. On Tuesday we enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch with music and crackers. Then Wednesday we had a very exciting afternoon at the Christmas party with a visit from a very special person.
Year 2 Christmas Production
Year 2 were fantastic in their Christmas Production of the Inn-Spectors. Wonderful singing and great performances from everyone. A great way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.
This term in DT we are making a Christmas bread. This week, we have made a basic bread roll, learning how to knead, shape and prove.
Our Local Area Walk
This week the three classes went on a walk around our local area as part of our Geography topic work. We were grateful for the sunny afternoons and enjoyed a pleasant stroll around the village. As we walked we were looking for features of the local area that were made or natural and keeping a tally of these. We also discussed safety when crossing the roads, near water and near railway lines. We must say thank you to the team of parent helpers who came along with us. We couldn’t have gone without you all!
Building more homes on Buckshaw Village!
This week our Year 2 children were given a challenge. They had to follow the example of the Three Little Pigs and try and build a house that would stay up when the Big Bad Wolf came to blow it down. They could use sticks and twigs from our wooded area, lollipop sticks, lego bricks, art straws and paper. As you can see….some were more successful than others! We definitely had some great teamwork, co-operation and leadership skills coming out in this group activity. We have future architects, designers, builders and project managers amongst our classes!
School Council Elections
The School Council Elections were a very tense time! A number of children had spent time at home designing their manifestos and then shared them with their class during the week. The elections were held on Friday and the results announced in Worship on Monday. The school councillors for Year 2 are: Alfie & Jasmine in 2L, Jacob & Remmi in 2B and Millie and Liam in 2W.
Outdoor PE lessons
We have been lucky to be able to go outside for our PE lessons on the sunny Autumn days that we have had recently. The children were pleased to be able to wear their new outdoor PE kits. They look very smart and were lovely and warm while we played our throwing and catching games on the playground.
A visit from James
This half term’s RE work is learning all about The Bible. We have learned a lot of facts about the books in The Bible. James came into talk to us to help us with our learning. He did some AMAZING tricks which left us all stunned and puzzled! He showed us his own Bible which he has had since he was a teenager. He told us that he tries to read the whole Bible every year and that he uses the Bible to listen to what God is saying to him.
A visit to the Library Bus
Some of our Year 2 House Captains and School Councillors were excited to go onto the Lancashire School’s Library Bus and choose almost 200 books for our Infant Library. They were thoughtful and selected books which children from Reception to year 2 would be able to enjoy. Hopefully some of these books will now be read by our Year 2 children in the Library Challenge over the next few weeks.
Fun with maps!
We have LOVED looking at the atlases in our first weeks in Year 2. The children enjoyed looking for countries and their capital cities. Some of them found places they had visited and others that they had heard of from friends and family. We had lots of interesting discussions and there were lots of questions the children wanted to ask and find the answers to. Such as… ” How many countries are there in the world?” , How many people are in the world?” , “Which is the biggest country?” , “How many different languages are there?” . Thankfully we were able to find out the answers by searching on Google! Can you find out the answers at home too?
Welcome back to school!
Our children have made a fabulous start to Year 2 this week. They have come back fresh from the holidays and have been smart in their uniforms and eager to learn. This week we have been reminding ourselves about the expectations at Trinity school and they have shown us all that they are well mannered and brilliantly behaved. What super stars they are! We are all looking forward to an exciting year of learning.
This half term Year 2 are learning about what it is like to live life on an island.
We will be learning about how lighthouses play a vital part of island life.
Please complete all of the tasks from the top row. Have a go at the fun topic activities on the bottom row if you’ve got time!
