Year 2 Curriculum
Here is our Curriculum Overview for what we will be covering this year in Year 2.
Maths Calculation Policy
After speaking with many of you at parents evening, we feel that it would be beneficial for the Maths Calculation policy to be available so you can see the methods we are using in school. This will help when completing Maths homework with your child. We are holding a Maths Information Evening In November where parents are invited into school to participate in Maths Workshops – please see the events page for more details.
Homework will be sent home each Friday and we would like your child to return it by the following Tuesday. We will endeavour to mark any homework sent in later than on a Tuesday before they receive their next piece of homework.
Year 2 will receive:
10 spellings, which will be matched to your child’s level of ability
English or Maths homework.
The topic homework grid focuses on activities which can be completed together at home or as a family. Whilst it is not essential that all of these are completed, we ask that your child should aim to complete some of the activities throughout the half term to reinforce their learning across the curriculum. We understand that family life can be busy and hectic, and we look forward to your child completing as much of the topic homework as you find manageable.
Your child’s reading books will be changed once a week following on from their Guided reading session in school. The day on which their book will be changed is dependent on which reading group they are in.
Your child will take home 2 books, 1 fiction and 1 non-fiction to read together with an adult. If they complete them, we would ask you to read through them together, talk about the book and ask them questions about the text they have read in more depth to encourage their comprehension skills.
It is really important that you read with and listen to your child read every day. Research shows that children who read at home to an adult on a daily basis make more progress in school. We believe that quality reading is better than quantity and that a good 10 minutes of reading with your child is more effective than trying to make them read for 30 minutes after a long day at school!
2D have PE on Mondays and Wednesdays
2B have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays
2W have PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays
Please ensure that your child has their full PE bag in school all of the time and that all of their kit is FULLY LABELLED with their FULL NAME.
We sometimes need our PE kits for other curriculum activities which may be on a different day to our set PE days.
In DT we have been looking at bread. We are planning and designing our own Christmas themed bread this half term. So far we have tasted lots of different breads and made a basic bread recipe, which was delicious.
